Pickleball Tournament Performance Rater

How well did you do in your last tournament?

How this works

This tool calculates tournament performance ratings for pickleball doubles teams, inspired by chess tournament performance ratings. Just like in chess, where a player's tournament performance is measured by how they perform against their opponents' Elo ratings, we apply the same concept to pickleball using DUPR ratings.

\[\text{TPR} = R_{\text{avg-opp}} + 1.5W - 0.75\]

Where Ravg-opp is the average opponent DUPR and W is win rate (between 0 and 1).

The term 1.5W − 0.75 is the performance differential, measuring how much better (or worse) a team performed compared to expectations. This linear formula maps:

  • A 50% win rate → +0 (performed as expected)
  • A 100% win rate → +0.75 (performed 0.75 DUPR above opponents)
  • A 0% win rate → −0.75 (performed 0.75 DUPR below opponents)

Just like in chess, teams that beat tough opponents get higher ratings than teams with the same record against weaker competition. A 3-1 record against 5.0+ DUPR opponents is more impressive than 3-1 against 4.0 opponents.

That said, in this model it doesn't matter which specific teams you beat or lost to—only your overall performance against the level of competition. For example, if you play both a strong team and a weaker team, and finish with one win and one loss, the model simply sees you played opponents of those ratings and went 1–1. It treats the results as a collection, not tracking which team you defeated.

Scores are not factored into this calculation; only wins and losses are considered, in keeping with the true spirit of competition.
